CORALLO DEL MEDITERRANEO: RUBRUM

Secondo la leggenda, il corallo nasce dal sangue della decapitata Medusa, che tinse e pietrificò le alghe sulle quali Perseo aveva appoggiato la sua testa, trasformandole in corallo. La scienza ci offre però un’altra versione: il corallo è la secrezione calcarea prodotta da comunità di piccoli polpi, con funzione protettiva e di sostegno. Le secrezioni, fondendosi tra loro, danno origine a colonie.
In gioielleria, i coralli più apprezzati per il loro valore e la loro bellezza sono quelli provenienti dal Mediterraneo e dal Pacifico.
Il corallo diffuso nel Mar Mediterraneo è il Corallium Rubrum. esso È caratterizzato da rami compatti di piccole dimensioni e da un colore uniforme che va da rosso scuro al rosso-arancione. Un’eccezione è rappresentata dal corallo di Sciacca, di origine vulcanica, la cui colorazione varia dall’arancio intenso al color rosa salmone.
